Tour

Welcome! Although the bulk of Women’s Voices Chorus activities occur right here in the Triangle, every five years or so we aim to take an international tour. Here you will find links to our tour travelogues and photos.

The goal of these trips is fourfold: (1) To appreciate and understand women’s choral traditions across the globe. (2) To bring American music to other locales. (3) To give us the unique opportunity to combine travel and music making. (4) To enhance group cohesion and help us make better music together.

Ireland

In August, 2024, WVC traveled to Ireland. We sang for the morning worship service at St. Mary’s Cathedral in Killarney and performed concerts at St. Mary’s Church of Ireland in Killarney, the Collegiate Church of Saint Nicholas in Galway, a senior center in Galway, and at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Dublin. Along the way saw sights such as the Dingle Peninsula with a sheepdog demonstration, Muckross house and Gardens, the Cliffs of Moher, the Killbeggan Distillery, and Dublin Castle. Follow our Facebook page and check out our photo album as we sing our way across Ireland. You can view a video of trip highlights here.

The Baltics

In July 2017, WVC traveled to the Baltic States—Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania—for our second international tour. We performed concerts in St. Catherine’s Church in Vilnius, Lithuania; St. John’s Church in Riga, Latvia; and the White Hall of the House of Blackheads in Tallinn, Estonia. We also had a few impromptu performances in such locations as the Latvian National Opera and the Tallinn Song Festival Grounds! Check out our Travelogue: Baltics Tour Travelogue

Hungary, Slovenia, Italy

In July 2012, after more than two years of planning, the chorus embarked on a tour of Hungary, Slovenia, and Italy. We performed concerts in St. Stephen’s Basilica in Budapest, St. Nicholas’s Church in Ljubljana, and St. Mark’s Basilica in Venice, among other venues, and explored musical and cultural landmarks in each city.

Vivaldi and Women’s Voices Chorus – From Venice to North Carolina

After the tour, Women’s Voices Chorus received a grant from the WCPE Education Fund to partially fund the production of a short documentary film about our Winter 2013

performance of Antonio Vivaldi’s Gloria in D. Vivaldi composed his Gloria for the girls and women of the Ospedale della Pietà, a convent, orphanage, and music school in Venice, Italy. Today it’s rare to hear an all-female performance of the Gloria, since not all women’s groups can provide the wide vocal range of the original Ospedale choir’s female tenors and basses. In our “Gloria et Pax” concert, accompanied by a baroque orchestra, we gave an authentic performance similar to what might have been heard in Venice 300 years ago.

The WCPE grant helped us produce a documentary about this performance, including footage from our rehearsals and concerts as well as interviews with our artistic director and chorus members.

The documentary and a full video recording of our Gloria performance are freely available online to audiences worldwide.

WCPE is a listener-supported classical music radio station based in central North Carolina. Its Education Fund supports classical music education opportunities and educational outreach. We are proud that it chose to help fund a project that will broaden understanding of Vivaldi’s music and female vocal music in general.
