Women’s Voices Chorus in the Community
Community Outreach Fund
WVC has created a Community Outreach Fund. Each semester, we donate to one local nonprofit organization chosen based on the music we are singing. Funds for this program are included in our budget, but we also welcome donations from chorus and audience members.
Negro Spiritual Royalties
Negro spirituals have brought soul-affirming power to the American music tradition, and their influence is far reaching. Recognizing that the original creators of these songs were enslaved and thus cannot be compensated or even recognized, some organizations have begun to pay “royalties” whenever they sing spirituals by contributing to the education of young Black musicians. Whenever Women’s Voices Chorus sings spirituals, we donate a percentage of the cost of the music as “royalties” to Kidznotes.
Kidznotes is a nonprofit organization that aims to transform the lives of underserved youth through music education. By providing children with instruments, music instruction, and ensemble performance opportunities, Kidznotes seeks to foster a community of young musicians who are empowered to reach their full potential both musically and academically. If you’d like to donate as well, please visit Kidznotes.org .
Families Moving Forward
In May 2025, based on our concert theme of “Coming Home”, we chose to support Families Moving Forward (FMF). With the vision “Every family thriving in a safe, stable home,” FMF helps families in the crisis of homelessness find their way home. They provide temporary housing, case management, skills education, and connection to community resources to help parents and children thrive in stable homes.
Voices in the Laurel
In January 2025, in light of the disaster in Western North Carolina and as a reflection of our concert title “Singing and Dancing the Earth Alive”, we chose to support Voices in the Laurel. Voices in the Laurel is a Western NC-based non-profit organization of three choirs for children and adults from Haywood, Buncombe, Jackson, Macon, and Swain counties under the direction of Martha Brown. It is an authentic program that focuses on providing young people quality choral education in fun and innovative ways. The program provides a healing community and a safe, loving environment.
