Hello Everyone,

Thanks for your work at rehearsal (and alto sectionals) – we accomplished a lot!
If you were out sick, we hope that you feel much better soon!
During our warm-ups we worked on singing vowels with consistent mouth space, moving only our tongues and lips to shape the vowels. Please don’t let your tongue fall backward when singing AH. Keep the tip resting gently against the inside of your bottom teeth.
Next week we will have soprano sectionals at 6:45pm – bring your questions!

Rehearsal Reflection
Swifter than Flame mm. 47-72
– worked on transitioning from m. 58 to 59 where we go from 3-part to 4-part divisi. This is tricky! If you have questions, ask me before rehearsal, during a sectional, or check with your section leader and I will help you navigate that transition.
– worked on pitches and rhythms
– reviewed from the beginning
Flying mm. 51-68
– worked on pitches and rhythms
– note that mm. 51-60 are a repeat of mm. 32-39
– the voices are independent of the accompaniment (oboe, violin, and cello) so we will need to be very secure in our parts
– we reviewed from the beginning
Flying Away mm. 27-47
– this is not a difficult piece in terms of pitches and rhythms but we were very challenged by intonation. Please use the ‘rehearsal tracks’ tab under our practice files to work on your part. Please note the descending intervals (altos, especially at m. 11) will fall flat if we are not consistently aware of our harmonic framework
– Darcy shared an article with me from 2003 about the poet, Kristiina Ehin and her parents. Thanks, Darcy!
– we need a narrator for this piece so please email me a voice memo audition if you are interested in being considered. I had a great time recording it for the rehearsal track – give it a go if you are inspired – it’s fun!
Flight Song mm. 30-64
– we have now worked through pitches and rhythms on this whole piece and can really dig into expressive elements the next time we rehearse it. Hooray!
– this piece will require a great deal of ‘eyes up’ so that we can navigate the tempo changes together.
Now Let Me Fly mm. 25-84
– great work on this! We need to spend more time on mm. 69-84 but we will give this section some attention the next time we work on this piece.
– note the dotted quarter note for “now” in m. 60. The previous iterations of the refrain begin with a quarter note. We need to be especially aware of this syncopation since it is different.
– the refrain in mm. 77-84 is different (and exciting)! We will give this further attention.
