Hello Everyone,

Great job tonight- much progress was made, especially on What Happens When a Woman! Proud of us!
Below is the link to the 3 videos – I’m singing the part and doing the body percussion. I know the music is a bit blurry – couldn’t make it any clearer…I can read it so hope you can, too. The edits are a bit rough but hopefully this will help you practice your singing part and your body percussion. Remember, I am your mirror so when I step left, you step right. I recommend that you not playback directly from Google but download the video or else wait until it is linked to our website resources. And please don’t share this video beyond our chorus (I’m sure it could go viral for all the wrong reasons – haha)…but mostly it would be a breach of our copyright. It is at 75% playback speed.

Solo audition information (Copied from last week’s email):
The following are solo/narration opportunities. Send me a voice memo of any/all for which you would like to audition by Saturday, October 25th. Play the practice file in the background on your laptop/computer and record your audition with your phone.
What Happens When a Woman? mm. 7-10 (there is also a short solo at m. 38 but you do not need to also sing that measure, just the opening solo).
No Fairy Tale Here – narration mm. 1-19 (there is also narration at the end but you do not need to include that in your audition, just the opening narration). Correction in m. 9 should read – “majority observes jealously.” There is not a set rhythm for this text, but it does need to fit the timing of the music. Play the practice file in the background).
Malala – spoken word mm. 48-61 (be sure to speak in the rhythm indicated in the score and play the practice file in the background).
Still I Rise (solo/duet) – mm. 1-49 If you would also like to audition with any improv on pages 12-15, feel free. The solo/duet can be sung down an octave or as written. The reference YouTube video in our practice files is a wonderful example of how the soloist can improvise.
We have covered all of our music together in rehearsal except the ending of Be Like Jane – great job to be on schedule and have that much accomplished in October. Now is the time for you to take stock of what you need to focus on specifically. We will have soprano 1 and 2 sectionals next week – send your section leaders any difficult spots so that we can work through the challenges together. Altos, you have another combined sectional coming up after our mini-concert on 11/10 and sopranos a combined sectional on 11/17. Let’s try to have all of our pitch/rhythm questions answered by these sectionals.
Looking Ahead to 10/27/25
We will run the following pieces and see what we can reasonably share for our mini-concert on11/3/25 We will want these pieces to be presentable but also know that we have more rehearsals yet, so more polishing will be in our future.
These are the pieces I have in mind for 11/3/25 that we will rehearse 10/27/25:
– What Happens When a Woman (Everyone may not have it memorized and maybe not all can do all of the body percussion – but it was really coming along tonight!)
– Wild Embers (intonation is the biggest challenge but was improved tonight)
– The Girl With the Numbers
– Rise Up
– Hands Upon the Plow
– Richer for Her
– Like a Mountain (not memorized for the mini-concert but memorized for January)
– Still I Rise (not memorized for the mini-concert but memorized for January)
