Hello Everyone,

Thanks for a lovely rehearsal. We covered a lot of ground, and I thoroughly enjoyed making music with you all.

Rehearsal Reflection

Love is Welcome Here – Catherine Dalton
mm. 25-40 (review mm. 1-24)

  • Our focus was primarily on pitches and rhythms for mm. 25-40
  • We reviewed mm. 1-24 and sang through mm. 1-24 in part circles.
  • mm. 25-40 we will take an eighth note rest at the end of each ‘oo’ for a quick breath (every time the ‘oo’ is re-typed in the score).

Sparks of Divinity – Lana Walter
mm. 1-21 (review mm. 1-4, 12-13)

  • Solid progress – good work!
  • Individual work with the practice files will be especially helpful with this piece – thanks for any time you can devote to this before next week.

Ave Maria – Brahms
mm. 1-42

  • Worked on pitches and rhythms, noting especially the B-flats and B-naturals
  • Started to work through dynamics and phrase shaping.

Mah Dodech Midod – Eleanor Epstein

  • Worked on pitches and rhythms – sang on a neutral syllable.

To Sit and Dream – Rosephanye Powell
mm. 1-24 50-63 (review mm. 13-14, 18-19, 22-23)

  • Wonderful work on this piece – the harmonies are sounding great!

Spes (Hope) Mia Makaroff

  • We reviewed pitches and rhythms and added the Latin text for the singers who were ready to move forward with the next challenge.

Through the House Give Glimmering Light – Amy Beach
mm. 1-41 (review)

  • We reviewed, taking note of which parts sang as duets to better understand what all of the parts were doing and how they fit together.

You’ve Got a Friend in Me – arr. Julie Gault
mm. 19-35 (review mm. 1-18)

  • We worked through the A1 syncopation mm. 26-31 – good job!
  • Rehearsed all other pitches and rhythms for this section.
  • Listen to the practice files YouTube recording for stylistic elements please.

Looking Ahead to 9/25/23

Love is Welcome Here – Catherine Dalton
mm. 41-54 (review mm. 1-40) – we will sing in mixed circles.

Sparks of Divinity – Lana Walter
(review mm. 1-21)

  1. 22-24 pitches and rhythms
  2. 25-40 rhythm only

To Sit and Dream – Rosephanye Powell
mm. 27-34 (review mm. 1-24 50-63) – We will work on a very blended sound, making sure that the notes of the chords are well-balanced.

Spes (Hope) Mia Makaroff
mm. 10-26 (review mm. 1-10, 59-72)

This new section is not a yoik (also spelled joik), but is rather composed by Mia Makaroff based on the soundscapes of yoiks. You can read of her studies and work with the Lásságámmi Foundation if you have not already.

https://acdaeast.org/2022/10/17/spes-hope-by-mia-makaroff/. I had a fun afternoon last summer listening to/watching YouTube videos of traditional Yoik singers. I really enjoyed this one – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ae4o06KE_T4. It is a wonderful example/performance. There are many more!

Through the House Give Glimmering Light – Amy Beach
mm. 42-85 (review mm. 1-4)

Please note that our scores do not have a measure 49. At the bottom of page 4 there is m. 48 and at the top of page 5 there is m. 50. We will just not have a m. 49 (like the absence of floor #13 in a high rise hotel – we will just skip that number!)

Tundra – Ola Gjeilo
mm. 1-27

Mah Dodech Midod – Eleanor Epstein
mm. 21-31 (review mm. 1-23)

Big Dogs, Music, and Wild, Wild Women – Ruth Huber
mm. 1-65

Chamber Choir

Ikan Kekek – Tracy Wong
mm. 1-24

The Bird’s Lullaby – Sarah Quartel
mm. 1-28

Hope you have a wonderful rest of your week – see you at rehearsal on Monday!

Best,
Laura
