Hello Everyone,

Thanks for a super productive and fun rehearsal last night. We are one giant step closer to a wonderful concert.

Remember, the next rehearsal is at University UMC – Janet has (and will) provide all the necessary details. See you at 7PM.

Moon Goddess
– very dramatic piece with lots of expression!
– crescendos are really great, especially when we added the crescendo m.127-end!
– m. 36 altos wait for beat 3 (someone moved early) we are in a ritard there and the S1s and S2s move on beat 2 so everyone please watch
– m. 48 rest for 2 beats (someone was in early)
– m. 61 watch for the downbeat (someone was in early)
– we need to check pitches again m. 70-73
– m. 103 there is a soprano moving to the A in m. 104 so be careful there, please – we fixed it when we went back

Summer
– nice job with the ending! All of the moving pitches are much clearer and together
– our a cappella sections are still under pitch…we will see how we do in the performance space…but please realize it is an ongoing challenge that we will work on some more next week.

Bright Morning Stars
– nice trio! I loved hearing your 3 voices together. We have a bit of tuning work to do (went about a quarter tone flat) but overall you sound lovely.
– good job from everyone with the phrasing.

The Stars Are Not Distant
– nice solo, Jennifer
– beautiful phrasing and dynamics from all

Izar Ederrak
– be sure to watch at the end for the moving notes in the soprano part
– fixed the alto wrong note in m. 17 but be aware there, please.
– even with Deb playing, we have some intonation challenges…improved with Deb playing but not there yet.

My Lord, What a Morning
– enjoyed your solo, Kinley!
– all the hums are now oos!
– m. 8 moves right to m. 9 without a pause. There IS a caesura at the end of m. 21 and we will pause there before moving on to m. 22.
– soften the ending T of what…and please remember HWat (and all of the other WH words).
– intonation much improved with Deb supporting….always can work on intonation
– nice dynamic contrasts!

Song to the Moon
– beautiful accompaniment Deb, Amy and Michele – such a treat to hear!
– lovely dynamic contrasts!
– lovely phrasing
– A2s bring out your part even more m. 25-28 please
– we need to check the A2 pitch in m. 65 – we don’t quite have an Ab major chord there.
– S2 and A1 please wait until beat 1 of m. 66 to start your phrase – the S1 and A2 begin on beat 4 of m. 65.

Par’o Era Estrellero
– overall much improved!
– sopranos were a bit flat on the D5, last note of m. 13 as you turn the page – it’s mf there, so sing with good breath energy and not worry about being too loud there.
– mezzos throughout please tune to the sopranos and hopefully that will also support the altos because the alto section is still considerably under pitch throughout…I will think hard on this for the next 6 days and see what other strategies I can provide to help you sing better in tune. The ascending intervals are not large enough and the descending intervals are too large.

Lakutshon ‘Illanga
– nice expressive phrases!
– still have some intonation work to do…

Mēnestinis Naki Brauca
– text is much improved – thanks for your extra work!
– still have some intonation work to do – we have definitely sung this more in tune in previous rehearsals – about a quarter tone flat which dulls the vibrancy in the sound because we aren’t locking in those sparkly overtones.

I Got the Sun in the Morning
– love hearing you sing this! So much fun!
– great job with the solo, Rah!
– good job with the rhythm correction in m. 28
– m.53 we need to release on beat 3 – some are carrying to the end of the measure.

When You Wish Upon a Star
– also love this one!
– HWen
– m.5 is not together. Some are moving early from ‘wish’ – note that Deb moves before the chorus.
– m. 34 watch so you are not in early after the caesura please

I am really looking forward to putting on the polishing touches next week and adding our second pianist for Moon Goddess (Kathleen J) and percussion (Tim and Emily). I hope everyone feels very proud of all we have learned and accomplished together.

Wishing you a happy rest of your week,
Laura
