Hello Everyone,
Thanks for a lovely rehearsal last night!
We will continue to work on finding our optimum seating arrangement so that everyone can hear, see, and enjoy the rehearsal. Just look for your seat by finding the card with the part that you sing. I hope that you can hear the other parts well enough to tune while still hearing your own part as needed while we learn pitches and rhythms. I think I discovered the source of our sound system issue (short in the mic cord) and we are working on solutions.
We covered a lot of ground – thank you for your hard work and beautiful singing. I thoroughly enjoyed rehearsing with you even though it felt like an all-nighter after being 7 hours ahead on Greece time! Thanks again to Kay and Deb for leading while I was away – much appreciated.
When You Wish Upon a Star mm. 1-20, 37-43
This piece has wonderful harmonies but the voice leading is very challenging – we’ll continue to work through these parts together but definitely use our practice tracks to work out places that are particularly challenging for you.
– note that m. 13 ‘that’ is an eighth note and m. 15 ‘quest’ (of request) is a quarter note.
– breath marks: end of mm. 8, 16, 44 (might change my mind on m. 44!)
My Lord What A Morning mm.17-24
– we worked through pitches and rhythms, learning parts a cappella – good job!
Two Eastern Pictures II. Summer mm. 78-96
– We worked through parts on this section
– m. 78-83 sopranos have the opening theme but in 3/4 instead of 3/8 and altos have the melody in octave unison
– last beat of m. 88, A1 sing a G (instead of the C) and S2 sing a C (instead of an E)
– this section combines the two musical themes in this piece – magical!
– m. 89 – super soft with a rounded ah vowel!
The Moon of Wintertime mm. 1-31
– This section is in G minor
– note the meter shift from 4/4 to 12/8 in m. 24 with the eighth note equal
– final consonants on the rests
– breathe end of mm. 16, 18, after beat 2 of m. 20
Par’o Era Estrellero mm. 41-60
– we worked through pitches and rhythms – great work on this!
– sopranos, I made a rhythmic error in the pronunciation recording in m. 44. The last note is indeed an 8th note, not a 16th.
– the F# should always feel on the high side!
Mēnestinis Naki Brauca mm. 7-10
– A1s will deserve a BIG round of applause when they nail their tricky part – it’s close – great work!
– we worked on this piece having the lightness of a balloon that floats, touches down, and floats up again, if that were possible in a rhythmic way! We really started to capture this lightness – hooray!
– S2 and A2 parts – throw a dart at your pitches so that none scoop up – that adds weightiness and detracts from the overall lightness we are working toward
– we did not add text but will next time. The pronunciation guide is posted on the website practice files (thanks, Karla!)
Regarding Just Intonation (I have mentioned it briefly in rehearsals) – this is a video about the harmonic series that Wendy found last year when we were discussing tuning – it’s really well done if you would like to watch.
Looking Ahead to 10/3/22

Izar Ederrak mm. 17-24
Bright Morning Stars mm. 21-30
Song to the Moon mm. 41-65

I Got the Sun in the Morning mm. 32-53

Laura
