Hello Everyone,

Thanks for all of your great work last night! We did not finish our to-do list but we did accomplish a lot of detailed work – yay us!

When I got home I did find my 2nd page of notes…right where both Deb and I looked before rehearsal….in my legal pad…I had skipped a page when I was writing them and then they were stuck together. Ah well, I remembered most of what was there and have put the few things not covered on the list for 12/20/21. It was a weird feeling though…I knew that I did not use invisible ink for page 2!

Don’t forget to send your solo audition to Laura D if you are interested in that opportunity. Those are due no later than 12/21/21. I’m looking forward to hearing you sing.

Rehearsal Focus

Rise Up
– worked through pages 15-16 (again for confidence!)
– answered questions throughout mm. 54-68

Nothing Short of Grace
– worked through mm. 35-50 (it’s getting stronger!)

Storm Comin’
– sang through mm. 43-end with body percussion

S1/S2 Sectional
– wonderful singing! We splashed through all of the mud puddles and had a great sectional.

Looking Ahead to 12/20/21

How Can I Keep from Singing?
– mm. 60-end

– note when melodic phrases are similar but NOT the same…for instance, compare the soprano part in mm. 27 and mm. 31- in m. 27 beat 4 is a B and in m. 31 beat 4 is an A.
– please listen to the YouTube performance in our practice files – the articulation and diction are stellar
– sing through all

Sing My Child
– sing through all. Remember those repeated pitches have to feel as if they are floating upwards so that we stay in tune.
– keep the tempo moving and dancelike!
– if you are singing the ostinato, sing with a bit of separation between the notes (marcato without being overly aggressive with the accents). The ostinato should be both a tonal and rhythmic support to the melodic line.
– don’t close to the NG in ‘sing.’
– I have been unclear about instructions for our ensemble breath (apologies!) mm. 62-74. Lower 3 voices, we will breathe together on the rests…so no breath in mm. 70 and 72.

Storm Comin’
– mm. 19-42 with body percussion

She Who Makes Her Meaning Clear
– mm. 44-56
– sing through all

What the Heart Cannot Forget
– mm. 1-26
– sing through all if we have time

Rise Up
– would love to sing straight through this if we have time…if not, PLEASE sing it over the break! Don’t want to lose any of our hard-earned ground.

RIcher for Her
– One aspect of this piece that I really love is thinking of the women in my life who come to mind on each of the phrases. Feel free to pencil the names of women special to you in your scores.
– syllabic stress and gentle phrase shaping/dynamics will bring this piece off of the page
– sing through all if we have time

Nothing Short of Grace
– sing through all if we have time

O Sister
– mm. 57-end
– sing through all if we have time

A1 Sectional – bring your questions and we work through our mud puddles!

I hope everyone has a wonderful week. I am looking forward to our rehearsal on Monday.

Hugs,
Laura
