Hello,

I had a lovely time with you at rehearsal last night. It is so wonderful to hear us sing and to dig into our repertoire together.

Happy birthday to all of our September and July birthdays!

Rehearsal reflections:

Rise Up mm. 1-37

  • pitches and rhythms
  • altos note the accents
  • altos note the different rhythms for ‘rise up’ – keeps it interesting!
  • shape the vowel for ‘rise’ and ‘up’ toward AH
  • breathe on the rests
  • ending consonants on the rests

Nothing Short of Grace mm. 1-33

  • pitches and rhythms
  • sing all notes for their full duration – note that ‘step’ and ‘heart’ are either an eighth note or quarter note in duration
  • the eighth note pulse stays steady throughout the piece
  • breathe on the rests
  • final consonants on the rests
  • there was a question regarding what part to sing: m.1-12 unison; m.13-end 3-part (Sop, Mezzo, Alto); when Sop line splits, P1 top notes and P2 bottom notes, when Mezzo line splits P3 top notes and P4 bottom notes

Storm Comin’ mm. 1-18

  • pitches and rhythms
  • note which notes belong with which syllables, especially in m. 5 and m. 17
  • work toward memorization on this piece so that we can add the body percussion

Sing My Child mm. 1-38

  • pitches and rhythms
  • 1st altos – make sure you can stay true to your pitch (F4) while the sopranos are singing G4s and Eb4s.
  • breathe on the rests
  • final consonants on the rests
  • two/three syllable words, stress the first or middle syllable (morning, dawning, unfolding, learning)
  • sustain the primary vowel (AH) for ‘my’ ‘child’ ‘bright’
  • vertical space for ’round’ ‘joy’ ‘dance’

Looking Ahead to 9/20/21

  • Crescendo on ‘boat’ and ‘shine’

She Who Makes Her Meaning Clear mm. 1-28

  • Pitches and rhythms
  • Observe the breath marks and/or breathe on the rests

Unsung Saint mm. 1-37

  • Pitches and rhythms
  • Breathe on the rests – very long phrases will require staggered breathing

O Sister mm. 1-38
