Hello Everyone,
I enjoyed our music and shenanigans last night – wonderful work, one and all! Special thanks to the S1s and S2s for their extra work at sectionals and for Virginia providing such detailed notes.
Thank you for providing your performance information – I will work on a new seating chart for our next rehearsal. For those not present, I sent you an individual email request for that information, if you would please reply as soon as possible that would be very helpful.
Solo Auditions information:
– Play the practice file on a device and record a voice memo on a second device (Will the Circle Be Unbroken should be sung a cappella – make sure to sing it in the key in which it is written – E Major)
– Email the file to me by 3/27/24. I will make decisions and let you know by our April 1st rehearsal (no fooling!).
– You may audition for any and all of the following solos – please sing the measures indicated:
- I’m Beginning to See the Light mm. 38-49
- My Favorite Things mm. 93-108, 149-150
- The Times They Are A-Changin’ mm. 9-20 (mm. 39-41 will be S1U)
- Will the Circle Be Unbroken mm. 1-9 – audition a cappella in the key of E Major (need to make sure that auditionees can stay in the key!) We will begin this piece with a MEZZO soloist singing the text/music for the soprano line as written mm. 1-9. We will then add a soprano and an alto, singing the notes/rhythms written for mm. 1-9 but using the text in mm. 10-17. The MEZZO soloist should sing mm. 1-9 as written and then repeat that music with the text from mm. 10-17. The soprano and alto auditionees should sing the music for mm. 1-9 using the text from mm 10-17. We will need a trio of singers to accomplish this so please audition if you are interested. Here is a link to a performance that is what I have in mind. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EvmkDC4aaOI
Everyone, please mark your music with the roadmap of Will the Circle Be Unbroken (use the link provided for the solo audionees above to see/hear the repeats)
- 1-9 MEZZO soloist
- 1-9 repeated, the soprano and alto soloists join, forming a trio, singing the notes/rhythms as written but using the text from mm. 10-17
- 1-9 repeated as written with the chorus singing, chorus continues through m. 41 (then repeats back to m. 18)
- 18-25 chorus repeats this section (then second time at m. 25 skip to m. 33)
- 33-44 chorus sings as written to the end.
Rehearsal Reflection:
We covered a lot of material, checking for notes/rhythm mostly on the following sections:
– A Stór mm. 45-80, then reviewed mm. 1-39. We definitely need to gain comfort and confidence with the IRish text so that we can move this piece along with the energy and vibrancy that is needed.
– I’m Beginning to See the Light mm. 36-61, then reviewed mm. 1-35 (there were many pitch inaccuracies mm. 1-35 so please review this section with your practice files if you have questions)
– My Favorite Things mm. 108-150- The Times They Are A-Changin’ mm. 42-end, reviewed from the beginning (we still need to work on mm. 37-41)
‘Tis the Gift to Be Simple – mm. 1-21, reviewed all
– Stand By Me mm. 32-56
– Mo Ghile Mear mm. 83-end, reviewed all
Looking Ahead to 3/25/24
– Now Let Me Fly – mm. 1-24, mm. 37-end, review all as time allows
– WIll the Circle Be Unbroken – all
– Stand By Me mm. 57-end, review all as time allows
– A Stór mm. 81-end (please work on your Irish text so that we can be precise and also work toward performance tempo, faster than we are currently singing)
– Now Let Me Fly – mm. 1-24, mm. 37-end, review all as time allows
– The Times They Are A-Changin’ – mm. 37-41, review all as time allows
– You Do Not Walk Alone – mm. 84-end
– I’m Beginning to See the Light mm. 54-end, review mm. 1-35, all as time allows
– Mo Ghile Mear – polish, clean up some inaccuracies in text and phrasing
Chamber Choir:
Review as needed and move to mixed formation
Announcement/Invitation from Deb:
Dear WVC members ~
I’d like to invite all of you to a concert I’m playing tomorrow night (Wednesday, March 20) at 7:30 pm at Carol Woods in Chapel Hill (Weaver Dairy Road) with Debbie Davis, cellist, and Julia Reeves, violinist – you know the players well as they performed in the last few concerts with WVC!!
We are playing a beautiful program of piano trios by Mozart, Mendelssohn, and Paul Schoenfeld (U of Michigan). Please come join us for an evening of wonderful and very fun music! (I think Deb Gaudin and Anne Harrison can vouch for this!)
No RSVP necessary.
There are NO restrictions for guests at this concert series at Carol Woods. All are welcome!
Hope to see you there,
Deborah Hollis
Hope everyone has a great rest of your week.
Sláinte!
Laura
