The Long Bright – Spring 2014

Andrea Clearfield’s cantata “The Long Bright” anchors this concert, which explores the difficult themes of illness and mourning, as well as those of joy and triumph over adversity. Accompanied by a chamber orchestra, we are delighted to bring you “The Long Bright,” along with pieces by a few of our favorite composers, including Lana Walter’s “Do Not Stand at My Grave and Weep” and Abbie Betinis’s “Be Like the Bird.”

Songs of My Sisters – Winter 2014

Our winter 2014 concert was a celebration of the 20th anniversary of Women’s Voices Chorus. We proudly support the work of active composers and the concert featured music arranged for or commissioned by WVC, including the world premieres of “My River Runs to Thee,” by Jayne Swank, and “The Nine Muses,” by our artistic director, Allan Friedman, an eclectic piece celebrating the mythic sisters who inspire artists of all kinds.

In June and July 2013, Women’s Voices Chorus embarked on its first international tour. We were thrilled at the chance to share American choral music with new audiences and to explore the choral traditions of the countries we visited: Hungary, Slovenia, and Italy.

This concert featured a diverse collection of American music: music from Latino-American, Jewish-American, African-American, and Native-American traditions; music of the Shakers, work songs, and songs of the American South; show tunes and jazz standards, as well as music by American classical composers. The concert also featured a world premiere of “If I Can Stop One Heart from Breaking,” as well as “I Never Saw a Moor,” both composed by Jayne Swank and based on poetry of Emily Dickinson. Three pieces were conducted by chorus members who are also conductors in their own right, showcasing another aspect of the talented musicians in Women’s Voices Chorus.

This concert by Women’s Voices Chorus on Sunday, July 17, 2011, was a benefit for CASTLE, the Center for Acquisition of Spoken Language Through Listening Enrichment, part of The Carolina Children’s Communicative Disorders Program (CCCDP). From classical to folk to gospel, all the songs celebrated the senses.
